“Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food.” -Hippocrates
People are turning to the ancient wisdom that food can heal their depression and diseases through a combination of herbs and whole foods.
Andrea Escobar turned to natural medicine to address her bi-polar disorder.
Mental health professionals prescribed many different medications for her bi-polar disorder. One in 10 Americans take an anti-depressant.
“When you’re on medication it feels like your master and you never feel like you have control of your life. I still have bad days, but now I talk about my disorder. I was very quiet for years, because of the stigma attached to mental illness, but being off medication has allowed me to know myself again,” she said.
Her psychotic episodes led to her being hospitalized multiple times for months at a time. Escobar is a former drug-addict, alcoholic and survivor of attempted suicide.
After leaving the hospital, she decided to visit an alternative medicine therapist who helped patients heal through food and herbs. This decision changed her life.
She found herself back home renewed, refreshed and cleansed. Today, she lives a life without prescription medicine.
She now sees her bi-polar disorder as an advantage. She has re-discovered her passion for cooking and aspires to create a gluten- and dairy-free food product line.
